Summary

Insurance agents face difficult ethical questions every day. Making it even more difficult, many of these dilemmas have no right or wrong answer. In answering many ethical questions, it is important to remember that each and every situation is different. The agent has a duty to both the insurance company and the client: The agent must be honest with the company, giving them all necessary information, but they must also keep their promise to their clients. There are no clear or easy answers to many of the moral dilemmas in life, but most ethical choices are not complicated with the proper understanding of what is legal and what is not, and how you can best serve your clients within the confines of your company’s code of ethics. This course focuses on ethical considerations for insurance companies and producers. It will give an overview the benefits of a code of ethics from the legal side of the issue, to internal, organizational, and client benefits, as well as provides helpful information for those looking to write a code of ethics. Our hope is by the end of this course, students will walk away understanding the importance of ethical decision making in all aspects of their insurance business.
