Summary

According to a 2015 report put out by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), most Americans underestimate the risk of developing a disability and needing long-term care. The group’s modeling estimates that about half (52%) of Americans turning 65 today will develop a disability serious enough to require long-term care, although most will need assistance for less than two years. About one in seven adults, however, will have a disability for more than five years. Long-term care is a critically important topic facing Americans today.
